South Africa: The crazy end of the Orlando Pirates transfer window

The Orlando Pirates grabbed headlines at the transfer deadline in South Africa after signing three star players.

The Pirates have signed striker Kermit Erasmus, midfielder Phillip Ndlondlo and goalkeeper Sipho Chaine.

The former South African champions signed Erasmus from defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns, while Ndlondlo and Chaine joined Marumo Gallants and Chippa United. In a statement, the Pirates said they were excited to reunite with Erasmus who played for them between 2013 and 2015. “Orlando Pirates are pleased to announce the signing of Kermit Erasmus on a two year contract. Romeo, as he is affectionately known, returns to the club after leaving to join French club Stade Rennais in 2016,” the statement read.

“The experienced forward joins the Buccaneers after being recently cleared by his former employer and becomes the sixth senior signing of the season,” the statement concluded. The Sundowns have since released a statement saying they have reached a mutual agreement with Erasmus to release him from his contract. “The enterprising striker’s contract was due to end in May and both parties have agreed to an early termination to allow Kermit to get more playing time elsewhere,” the Sundowns statement read.

Erasmus played for the Buccaneers from 2013 to 2015 after signing from SuperSport United. He then embarked on a European adventure with Rennes in the French Ligue 1, being his first destination in the year 2016. Rennes sent Erasmus to Lens on a loan spell for most of his two-year contract which ended in ended in 2018. The striker then left for Portugal before coming full circle and returning to Cape Town City and then Sundowns in 2020.

The Pirates have released players such as Linda Mthambo, Tshegofatso Mabasa, Ntsikelelo Nyauza, Happy Jele and Gabadinho Mhango and signed new ones, including Tapelo Xoki, Nkosinathi Sibisi, Miguel Timm, Azora Matrosa, Evidence Makgopa, Eva Nga and Shane Saralina . . . .
