(Keystone-ATS) The Democratic Party (DP), the main opposition force, increased its majority in South Korea’s Parliament after Wednesday’s legislative elections, according to exit polls.
According to these polls made public by South Korean television at the close of the vote, all the opposition parties combined could obtain a “super-majority” of at least 200 seats out of 300 in the National Assembly. This number would be enough to counter the veto power of conservative President Yoon Suk Yeol, or even to remove him from office.
Lee Jae-myung’s Democratic Party (center left) and its allied parties won up to 197 seats, compared to 156 in the outgoing Parliament, polls indicate.
President Yoon’s People Power Party (PPP) is credited with between 85 and 99 seats, compared to 114 in the outgoing Parliament. A new anti-system party, Rebuild Korea, founded by former Justice Minister Cho Kuk following a two-year prison sentence for corruption which he is appealing, is credited with 12 to 14 seats.
Analysts widely expect Cho to join forces with Democrats to form a “supermajority” against the PPP. These polls were carried out by the three main South Korean television channels, among some 360,000 voters across the country.
These results, if confirmed, augur a complicated end of mandate for Mr. Yoon, narrowly elected in 2022 against Mr. Lee and already prevented from implementing his right-wing political program due to lack of parliamentary majority.
