South Korean shares ended sharply higher for the fifth straight session, driven by investors snapping up shares of major chipmakers. The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) advanced 164.60 points, or 2.42 percent, to close at 6,977.94 on Friday, August 14, 2026.
Global Tech Tailwinds Lift Seoul’s Trading Floors
Following positive overnight sessions on Wall Street—where the Dow Jones Industrial Average ticked up 0.13 percent and the Nasdaq Composite climbed 0.81 percent—investors in Seoul wasted little time diving back into high-growth assets.
Foreign investors and institutional players have played a role in fueling this ascent. According to Kang Jin-hyeok, an analyst at Shinhan Securities Co., reported by UPI, strong foreign buying was helped by relief surrounding U.S. consumer price index data meeting expectations, alongside solid earnings reports from global AI infrastructure companies.
Samsung and SK hynix Lead the Charge
In the trading rooms of Seoul, technology stocks led the advance. Market bellwether Samsung Electronics climbed 2.4 percent to finish at 274,500 won per share. Meanwhile, rival chipmaker SK hynix posted a 3.26 percent gain, reaching 1.65 million won.
This upward pressure builds on a wider rally observed across the broader electronics ecosystem earlier in the week. Industry affiliates and parent corporations have shared in the bounty; for instance, SK Square and Samsung Electro-Mechanics recorded surges during earlier sessions. But there is a broader economic dynamic at play beyond just equities.
Currency Stabilization and Bond Market Movements
As the equity rally pressed forward, the currency markets reflected a parallel strengthening of domestic capital. The Korean won rose against the U.S. dollar, quoted at 1,418.3 won at 3:30 p.m., marking an upward movement of 1.1 won compared to the end of the previous trading session. This builds upon a similar recovery observed a day prior, when the won ticked up 3.7 won against the dollar.

Bond markets also signaled confidence among fixed-income investors. Yields on government treasuries softened slightly, reflecting steady demand as capital shifted across multiple asset classes.
