The front of the Tottenham HotspurHeung-Min Sonbecame a year younger overnight this week after he South Korea natal formally scrapped its unusual traditional method of counting the ages of citizens.

The law was approved in December by newly elected Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol, who had previously campaigned to abolish the country’s unorthodox method of counting the age to bring it in line with the rest of the world. The edict finally went into effect on Wednesday, at which point all members of the Korean population effectively became a year or two younger in unison.

The traditional Korean age system goes back centuries and saw the gestation period of all babies included in their age, considering them to be one year old at birth. Each person then aged another year every January 1, even babies born in December, who would turn two despite having been born perhaps only a week or two earlier.

The common international system of counting age (a baby being considered zero at birth and having another year added to its age annually thereafter) has also been in effect in South Korea since the 1960s, but it was used exclusively for official purposes, such as medical assistance or legal documentation. Starting this week, the country has abolished its traditional system and will now only adhere to the international system in an effort to reduce the amount of disputes and confusion that used to arise due to the discrepancy between the two systems.

For the record, Son he was born on July 8, 1992 and is 30 years old, according to the international aging system. Of course, despite the constitutional changes being made in Korea, Spurs will not have to alter the striker’s registration information, as the club simply needs to provide the Premier League a verified date of birth, not an age.
