Brent Cobb?! At least the family name should make one or two country fans sit up and take notice. In fact, it is the younger cousin of Dave Cobb, a nine-time Grammy winner who has significantly influenced the careers of Chris Stapleton, Sturgill Simpson and Jason Isbell. Dave Cobb, perhaps the most influential person in alternative country at the moment and closely associated with none other than Shooter Jennings, was also the one who helped Brent, 12 years his junior, make his debut in 2006. The album “No Place Left to Leave,” produced in Los Angeles, had no major response and took the then 20-year-old back to his home in southwest Georgia.

Last but not least, it was the contacts with local artists, such as the new country star Luke Bryan, who came from a neighboring community, that encouraged Brent Cobb to record it via a songwriting contract Nashville to try. He found prominent buyers for his song material in Kenny Chesney, Little Big Town, David Nail and Miranda Lambert, and in 2016 he became known to a larger audience as an artist with the album “Shine On Rainy Day”. Now, 7 years later, the next step takes place and Brent Cobb presents his first self-produced album Southern Star.

“Well, I’m coming out Georgia. So I always look for the southern star. Historically and currently, this place also happens to be the same place that has produced many of the most influential artists in the entire music world. Music as we know it would not exist without the American South.” Following the artist’s statement, there is probably no other region in the world in which so many musical movements – from Country, through blues, gospel, bluegrass to southern rock. Unsurprisingly, Brent Cobb’s latest work is also a harmonious mix of all the influences that represent the American South.

A few weeks ago the opener and title song “Southern Star” by the Texas band made the rounds The Wilder Blue (produced by Brent Cobb) was recommended. There is an airy relaxation with which this home anthem catches the ear. The quiet funky sound seems so wonderfully effortless that you can have high expectations for the rest of the album. The following “It’s A Start” is a grounded, acoustically instrumented piece of work in which Brent Cobb’s interpretation of Paul Simon’s “Graceland” shines through. On “Living The Dream” the funk is given free space for the first time, before the singer and songwriter in the style of Jason Isbell takes over on the great ballad “Patina”, written by his wife Layne. “On’t Know When” is a colorful mix of styles in which blues and soul influences are embedded on a southern rock framework. “Devil Ain’t Done” is a bit rougher in tone and more influenced by Southern Funk. The wonderful “When Country Came Back To Town” traces Brent Cobb’s musical career, with the names of the artists who, as pioneers of true country, also shaped our artist’s career. The bottom line is that it offers Troubadour from South Georgia on “Southern Star” authentic, mature, close to tradition and with deep emotion a great kaleidoscope of his musical Hometown at. The name Cobb once again stands for quality and begins in the American one music scene to leave ever deeper traces.

Conclusion: It’s certainly a challenge to maintain your musical independence in the orbit of the Nashville scene. Brent Cobb, who comes from the “Deep South” of Georgia, has done this convincingly on “Southern Star”. Its cool, authentic vibe gives the interested listener an enjoyable journey through the musical south without any commercial frills.
