The Plenary of the São Paulo City Council approved on Thursday, 21st, in a second vote, the city’s Budget for next year. The total value is R$111.8 billion, which represents an increase of 16.6% compared to the Budget approved for this year. The increased amount will be available to Mayor Ricardo Nunes (MDB) in an election year.

The project was sent by the mayor to the City Council on September 29 and was approved symbolically, that is, without counting votes. Even so, the PT and PSOL benches were against the proposal.

In a year in which he is running for re-election as City Hall, Nunes will have R$3.8 billion available to invest in housing programs. The amount is the budget of the Housing Secretariat, which went from R$2.5 billion in 2023 to R$3, 8 billion in the election year, almost 50% more. The housing issue is the main focus of his opponent, federal deputy Guilherme Boulos (PSOL-SP).

Last week, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva came to the capital of São Paulo to show support for Boulos in the race for Mayor. It is no coincidence that the two participated together in an event to sign the contract to begin construction work on the Copa do Povo housing project, which is part of the federal government’s Minha Casa, Minha Vida program in the East Zone of São Paulo.

The mayor responded to the act. During the delivery of 109 popular housing units by the city hall this Wednesday, 20th, in Vila Olímpia, Nunes spoke openly about re-election and needled Boulos “It is very easy for people to say that they defend housing, that they defend I don’t know what, and the delivery, zero. The important thing is this, making the dream come true,” he declared.

Another popular measure that boosts Nunes in the electoral race and is foreseen in the Budget is the free municipal bus fare on Sundays.

The Mobility and Traffic Secretariat received a 67% increase compared to this year’s budget, reaching R$ 10.4 billion, providing for expenses with the implementation of the new program

The mayor rode the bus last Sunday, the 17th, to launch the program. Passengers complained about the free fare being implemented on the only day they have to rest, and not on working days.

Defended over the years by the left, in movements such as Passe Livre (MPL), the proposal should invade the 2024 electoral campaigns. Nunes’ opponents believe that this could be the banner he needs to be re-elected.

The budget of SPTrans, one of the companies that receives subsidies from the city hall, will increase from R$10.8 billion to R$12.1 billion in 2024, representing more than 81% of the funds allocated to companies.

The department that received the majority of the Budget was Education, with R$21.8 billion, followed by the Health department, with R$17.8 billion.

Among the sub-prefectures, Sé is in first place, with R$ 127 million, followed by the sub-prefecture of São Mateus, with R$ 74 million.

The project will go to the mayor himself for approval.
