Weather of Arabia – It is the most complex suit ever, as a slight defect in its functions may lead to the death of a pioneer who went out on a special mission to reveal to us the hidden world of space, so how is the space suit made and what are its components and functions?
What are the parts and functions of the astronaut suit?
- Communication carriers: A device worn on the head of the astronaut under his helmet that contains a microphone, radio, and camera, to enable him to communicate with crew members.
- Upper torso assembly: is the part that covers the back and is made of fiberglass, and is an important support for the astronaut.
- Lower torso assembly: is the lower half of the ECU, and includes pants, knee and ankle joints, and boots.
- Life support subsystem: It consists of oxygen tanks, one for periodic use for seven hours, and the other for emergency cases, as well as water tank filters to regulate the temperature in the astronaut’s body, and the jet engines that help him to walk in space.
- Arms and helmet assembly: The arms assembly protects the astronaut’s arms, while the helmet is used to protect the head.
- A high-absorption clothing layer: The space suit is made of several layers, the least thick of which is the high-absorption layer, and its mission is to collect human waste. There is also a cooling and ventilation layer made of fibers, an easily expanding material equipped with tubes, a heat exchanger to reduce the temperature of the liquid, and others to wick away perspiration, a layer to maintain suit pressure, and an external thermal core to prevent overheating.
What is the importance of a space suit?
- It preserves the astronaut’s life in the outer space environment from dangerous cold and radiation.
- Space suits prevent the astronaut from being exposed to space dust.
- Space suits protect the eyes from the bright sun.
- Space suits provide oxygen to astronauts so they can breathe and function in space.
- The suits carry water and a drink for the astronaut.
How does a space suit work?
- It provides the proper air pressure for the astronaut once he puts his suit on; To conserve fluids in his body, the suit is an inflated balloon of fabric that equalizes cabin pressure.
- It starts pumping out oxygen by 21%, and nitrogen to keep the lungs and blood going.
- It has the property of getting rid of carbon dioxide by means of lithium hydroxide canisters, which is a can in the backpack.
- The astronaut sweats, so the suit wicks away the sweat to prevent him from dehydrating.
- Special joints made of fabric help astronauts easily flex their arms and legs for movement.
- A gas-carrying device enables the astronaut to move freely inside the spacecraft.
