SpaceX and Tesla Choose Texas for Massive Terafab AI Chip Plant

Tesla and SpaceX have broken ground on a massive Texas semiconductor complex known as the Terafab. Backed by an initial 16.8 billion dollar investment, the Grimes County facility will span over 100 million square feet of manufacturing space to build advanced AI chips for humanoid robots, robotaxis, and space data centers.

Elon Musk’s industrial footprint in the Lone Star State is expanding beyond rockets and electric vehicles into high-volume silicon manufacturing. Moving away from early plans to anchor the project at Austin’s Giga Texas campus, Tesla and SpaceX formally confirmed that their vertically integrated chipmaking venture will rise in Grimes County, north of Houston. The campus is designed to bridge a looming compute deficit as Musk’s companies push into robotics, autonomous transport, and orbital intelligence.

Grimes County Site Selection and Multi-Phase Financial Commitments

The shift to Grimes County follows months of planning that began when Musk first unveiled the project in March at Austin’s Seaholm Historic Power Plant. Initial estimates pegged the venture between 20 billion and 25 billion dollars, but filings and corporate disclosures place the initial construction capital at 16.8 billion dollars. Company filings suggest that total expenditures across subsequent build-out phases could ultimately climb as high as 119 billion dollars.

The announcement follows a local public meeting in Grimes County.

The project is expected to create at least 3,000 jobs, with 60% to 80% of workers recruited from Grimes and neighboring Brazos County.

Vertical Integration for Optimus, Cybercab, and Space Data Centers

Unlike conventional semiconductor operations that farm out packaging and testing across different facilities, the Terafab is designed to house the entire manufacturing cycle under one roof. According to corporate disclosures, the facility will utilize Intel’s 14A process technology for its initial phase to produce logic and memory devices side by side.

The consolidation is intended to accelerate iterative improvements and reduce cycle times. Company statements emphasize that the output is tailored specifically to internal demand that external foundries cannot guarantee.

“Terafab will produce chips optimized for edge computing and inference for use in hardware like Tesla’s Optimus robots and self-driving Cybercabs, along with high-power chips designed for operating SpaceX’s space-based data centers.”

Power Generation and Natural Gas Infrastructure in Grimes County

Powering a 100-million-square-foot campus requires independent utility solutions. Riley Trettel, who oversees energy and data center development for SpaceX, confirmed during the Grimes County public meeting that the company intends to generate its own electricity rather than relying entirely on external grids.

SpaceX plans to build natural gas-fired power plants directly on-site, alongside very large battery energy storage arrays. For industrial water needs, the campus will draw from the Gibbons Creek Reservoir instead of competing with local municipal groundwater sources, incorporating on-site wastewater treatment and recycling systems.

Balance Sheet Exposure and the Compute Deficit

Underpinning the 16.8 billion dollar initial commitment is a projected compute deficit. Musk’s companies calculate that their combined demand will exceed 1 terawatt of compute per year, a volume that outstrips current global supply.

While neither company has disclosed whether capital expenditures will draw directly from corporate balance sheets, both maintain substantial cryptocurrency treasuries. SpaceX holds 18,712 Bitcoin valued at roughly 1.29 billion dollars, while Tesla holds 11,509 Bitcoin, maintaining their positions among the largest corporate holders in the United States even as market valuations fluctuate.
