SpaceX set to release its first earnings report as a public company. Here’s what to look for

SpaceX releases its first quarterly financial results as a public company on Tuesday following a volatile June initial public offering. CEO Elon Musk faces Wall Street scrutiny over cash burn, satellite broadband growth, and massive artificial intelligence capital expenditures as the company prepares for an upcoming lockup expiration.

The stakes are unusually high for SpaceX’s first earnings report as a public company on Tuesday, arriving after the close of stock market trading at 4 p.m. ET. Following a record-setting initial public offering in June that initially made Elon Musk the first-ever trillionaire, the rocket, satellite, and artificial intelligence provider has experienced a turbulent summer. Shares plunged below their offering price after peaking earlier in the summer.

Investors and analysts are bracing for a busy session. A call with Wall Street analysts is scheduled for 4:30 p.m., where Musk is expected to answer questions. Wall Street analysts will focus on the hard numbers, but retail investors will be influenced by some of the sound bites, Jay Ritter, an IPO expert and professor at the University of Florida’s Warrington College of Business, said in an email to Cbsnews.

Starlink Revenue and Satellite Growth Under Examination

Behind the headline figures lies a complex three-segment enterprise spanning launch services, connectivity, and artificial intelligence. Melissa Otto, head of Visible Alpha research at S&P Global, expects the company to report $6.9 billion in revenue for the second quarter, largely propelled by the Starlink broadband satellite network. Connectivity generated $11.4 billion of revenue and $4.4 billion of operating income during 2025, cementing Starlink as the primary cash generator and intrinsic value driver for the business.

Observers will parse subscriber additions alongside customer mix, pricing, and capital efficiency. Nicolas Owens, an equity analyst at Morningstar covering SpaceX, projects subscriber growth of 93% in 2026, a moderation from the 229% growth recorded in 2025. With pricing differentials spanning more than 300-fold between residential subscriptions and high-end commercial aviation contracts, analysts want to see whether the revenue mix continues shifting toward higher-margin commercial offerings.

Artificial Intelligence Investments and High Burn Rates

While Starlink provides a steady operational foundation, artificial intelligence represents the enterprise’s largest capital sink and strategic question mark. In the first three months of 2026 alone, the AI segment generated $818 million in revenue, fueled by scaling compute infrastructure, placing data centers in orbit, and enhancing Grok, the AI chatbot developed by xAI that SpaceX acquired in February.

That growth comes with steep expenses. Overall net losses are accelerating quickly; net losses for the first half of the year are expected to exceed the $5 billion lost during all of last year, with a projected second-quarter net loss of $1.9 billion, or 23 cents a share, based on a FactSet survey of analysts cited by AP News.

Lockup Expiration Pressures and Near-Term Stock Volatility

Beyond operating metrics, market watchers are tracking imminent structural pressures on the stock price.

Dan Ives, partner and senior managing director at Yorkville Ives & Co., noted that investor sentiment will ultimately depend on Musk’s messaging.

Despite the headwinds, some market participants anticipate that institutional buyers will absorb the newly freed inventory. Some of them will become buyers this week, soaking up shares that existing shareholders will be allowed to sell, Ritter told Cbsnews, adding that This short covering will reduce the drop that otherwise will be occurring on Thursday.
