Spain Residency Card: Fast-Track Verification for Pakistani Applicants

by Alexandra Hartman Editor-in-Chief

Islamabad – Overseas Pakistanis seeking residency in Spain will soon benefit from a faster, more efficient verification process, following a high-level meeting convened by the Pakistani government on February 22, 2026. The move aims to facilitate the implementation of a new Spanish resident card scheme for eligible Pakistani nationals, offering a pathway to legal status in Spain.

Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and Federal Minister for Overseas Pakistanis Salik Hussain co-chaired the meeting, which focused on streamlining the application process and providing full support to Pakistani citizens navigating the requirements. The initiative comes as Spain opens its doors to overseas Pakistanis, initially offering one-year resident cards, with a potential path to permanent residency and citizenship after seven to eight years of legal residence. This development represents a significant opportunity for the Pakistani diaspora seeking stability and legal recognition in Europe.

Expedited Verification and Single Character Certificate

A key outcome of the meeting was the decision to expedite the document verification process, addressing a major concern for applicants. Currently, applicants are required to provide a character certificate and other necessary documentation. To simplify this, the Ministry of Interior has directed that a single national character certificate, issued by the National Police Bureau, will be accepted in lieu of separate certificates. This change is intended to reduce bureaucratic hurdles and accelerate the processing of applications. According to officials, this streamlined approach will prevent difficulties for applicants and ensure complete support at every level.

Policy Exclusions and MFA Support

Pakistan’s Ambassador to Spain, Dr. Zahoor Ahmed, provided a detailed briefing on the Spanish Resident Card scheme during the meeting. It was explicitly clarified that this policy is not applicable to individuals seeking political asylum. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has pledged its full support for the implementation of the Spanish Resident Card process, working in coordination with the Ministry of Interior to ensure a smooth rollout. The Ministry of Interior also reaffirmed its commitment to providing legal protection and facilities to overseas Pakistanis.

One-Year Residency and Long-Term Prospects

Eligible individuals will initially be issued a resident card valid for one year. After completing seven to eight years of legal residency, they will become eligible to apply for permanent residency and, Spanish citizenship. Federal Minister for Overseas Pakistanis Salik Hussain expressed his satisfaction with the development, stating that granting legal status to thousands of Pakistanis is a positive step forward. The government’s commitment to facilitating this process underscores its dedication to supporting its citizens abroad.

The initiative is expected to benefit a significant number of Pakistani nationals living in Spain, providing them with legal security and access to opportunities. The simplified verification process and government support are designed to craft the application process more accessible, and efficient.

As the Spanish Resident Card scheme moves forward, the focus will be on effective implementation and ongoing support for applicants. The Pakistani government has signaled its commitment to ensuring a seamless process, and further updates will be provided as the scheme progresses.
