Dubai, United Arab Emirates (CNN) — Former US President Barack Obama congratulated Spain on winning the 2023 Women’s World Cup, which was held in Australia and New Zealand.

Obama wrote through his account on the “X” platform (formerly Twitter): “Congratulations to Spain on winning its first Women’s World Cup title, the United States of America will return next time.”

Spain won the title for the first time in the history of its participation in the tournament, while the US team, the defending champion in the 2015 and 2019 editions, was eliminated in the round of 16.

Spain won the title following defeating England, 1-0, in the final match that was held at the Australia Stadium in Sydney.
