Madrid – The Spanish opera singer Teresa Berganza is dead. The woman, who for decades was considered one of the best mezzo-soprano voices in the world, died on Friday at the age of 89 in San Lorenzo del Escorial, northwest of Madrid, according to relatives and the Spanish Ministry of Culture . In its tribute, the state television station RTVE recalled that shortly after her international breakthrough in the 1950s, the singer was celebrated by the media as “the mezzo-soprano of the century”. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez wrote on Twitter that “Berganza’s voice, elegance and art” would “always accompany the Spaniards”.
