Spanish Opposition Leader Urges Withdrawal From 2030 World Cup Hosting

Alberto Núñez Feijóo, leader of Spain’s opposition People’s Party, declared that Spain should withdraw from its role as co-host of the 2030 World Cup if Morocco is chosen to stage the final, Yahoo Sports reported.

Opposition Leader Demands Tournament Withdrawal over Final Match Venue

  • Spain’s main opposition leader demands a complete tournament withdrawal if Morocco secures the final match.
  • FIFA has not yet confirmed the host venue for the 2030 tournament’s showpiece fixture among co-hosts Morocco, Spain, and Portugal.
  • Morocco continues to campaign heavily for the proposed 115,000-capacity Grande Stade Hassan II in Casablanca to host the final.

Political Pressure Mounts Over 2030 Venue Selection

The centenary tournament is scheduled to be jointly hosted by Morocco, Spain, and Portugal. The opening three matches will take place in South America as a tribute to Uruguay’s hosting of the inaugural competition in 1930, Yahoo Sports noted. FIFA has not yet confirmed which of the three principal co-hosts will be given the final. The governing body stated only that an official decision will be made in due course.

Despite the lack of a definitive announcement, Alberto Núñez Feijóo maintains that Spain ought to pull out of organizing the event if it is not selected to host the showpiece match. “If Morocco ends up hosting the final, Spain should leave the organisation (of the tournament),” he told El Chiringuito TV.

National Pride and Stadium Contenders in Spain and Morocco

Writing on X in a post referencing the El Chiringuito interview, Alberto Núñez Feijóo added: “Restoring our country’s pride also means not letting anyone walk all over us. The World Cup final belongs to Spain. The world’s top footballing nation is not humiliated. I will defend my country’s interests. In this too.”

According to The Independent, although the revamped Camp Nou or Santiago Bernabéu Stadium are viewed as significant Spanish candidates, Morocco persists in its bid to have the planned 115,000-seat Grande Stade Hassan II in Casablanca selected for the event. Morocco is currently holding the Under-17 boy’s World Cup, served as the venue for an urgent FIFA management board gathering in August when FIFA president Gianni Infantino was under political pressure, and is scheduled to host the FIFA Congress next year, an event where Infantino plans to pursue a fourth presidential term.
