A 63-year-old Spanish tourist died early Monday morning after a fire broke out in her hotel room in Fátima, Portugal. The blaze prompted the emergency evacuation of 53 people and drew a coordinated response from multiple rescue agencies as investigators launched a formal inquiry into the tragedy.
Emergency Response and Midnight Evacuation at the Hotel
The emergency services received the initial alert at 00:39 on Monday regarding a fire at the Hotel Avenida in Fátima, located within the municipality of Ourém. According to reports from the Médio Tejo Sub-regional Emergency and Civil Protection Command, rescue operations deployed 10 vehicles and 28 operational personnel to the scene, bringing together elements from the Bombeiros de Fátima and the Voluntários de Ourém.
When firefighters arrived at the establishment, they found that the fire had concentrated on a first-floor guest room. Rescue personnel reported that the room where the victim stayed was taken by the flames, according to details provided by sources within the Fátima fire department. Although fire crews managed to contain the flames to that single room, thick smoke quickly spread through the hotel.
The smoke hazard forced the immediate evacuation of 53 individuals, comprising both hotel guests and staff members. Authorities moved the evacuees to a secure space within the hotel while crews battled the blaze. Firefighters successfully brought the incident under control, with authorities noting the fire was fully extinguished by 01:06.
Victim Identity and Medical Intervention
The woman who lost her life was a 63-year-old Spanish national. She was traveling as part of a larger tour group composed of Spanish visitors who were registered guests at the hotel. Emergency responders found her without life signs inside the room where the fire originated.
Despite these emergency efforts, her death was officially declared at the location by the attending medical crew.
While the majority of the guests and staff escaped unharmed, five other individuals required rescue assistance due to the fire. The swift intervention of multiple local fire corporations prevented the flames from spreading beyond the initial room, sparing the wider lodging structure from catastrophic damage.
Multi-Agency Investigation into the Fire’s Origin
With the fire extinguished and the hotel safely evacuated, law enforcement and specialized investigative bodies secured the scene. The National Republican Guard and the Judiciary Police were both mobilized to the location alongside emergency medical and firefighting units.
