Speedometer in Asturias, Spain Removed for High Violations – Motor Journalism

Unusual news comes from Asturias, Spain. There, a speedometer was removed due to the high volume of violations it detected per day. It was the right thing to do, of course, but the local mail service couldn’t deliver the tickets on time.

The Motor Journalism site says that this radar was decommissioned with an impressive record: 300 fines per day. It was located in Lugones, in the municipality of Siero, and detected vehicles that exceeded the maximum speed of 30 kilometers per hour.

The Siero City Council registered 15,000 fines for speeding in the first three months thanks to this radar. And the postmen, responsible for delivering fines to drivers who violated the speed limit and were hunted by radars, were overwhelmed by the volume of complaints, dedicating almost exclusively the afternoon shift to delivering these fines.

The local Post Office doubled its efforts, but it was not enough. And Ángel García, the mayor, made the decision to deactivate the radar. “This situation causes me great discomfort and I apologize as mayor,” explained the mayor. “Maybe we should have done it differently, or not put up the radars, but we also had to take measures regarding the number of complaints and reports that we received from neighbors about speeding.”

The situation generated a lot of discomfort among the citizens, both on the part of those who opposed the installation of the radars and those who were upset because one was lowered. Some neighbors confessed to having received up to 16 fines in a single day.

How much does the fine for speeding cost in the City of Buenos Aires in 2024

Unlike other violations, this varies depending on the amount of km/h by which the limit for each type of road has been exceeded. The Fixed Unit is between 40 and 4,000 pesos. Prices start at $10,266 and go up to $586,640. It is worth clarifying that the most expensive of all is charged when one exceeds 140 km/h.

These are the most common fines committed in the City of Buenos Aires:

  • Parking blocking a ramp or handicapped spot
  • Driving using your cell phone
  • Send or view a text message
  • Run a red light
  • Not wearing a seat belt or putting on a helmet on a motorcycle
  • Failure to pass the alcohol test

On the other hand, drivers also have to pay close attention to the scoring system implemented by the government. The license can lose between 5 and 20 points depending on the violation committed.
