Spooky Halloween Decorations: A Hauntingly Beautiful Garden in Grimbergen

It’s impossible to pass by Alain and Marie-Jeanne’s house without stopping. At the Brussels Ring exit near Grimbergen, cars slow down in front of this garden taken from a Hollywood horror film.

Skeletons, zombies emerging from the ground, a doll with a chilling smile and other sinister monstrosities adorn the garden. “A lot of children stop to take photos. On the weekend, it parades here in front. It brings liveliness to the neighborhood,” smiles Marie-Jeanne.

Since moving to Grimbergen ten years ago, the couple have started celebrating Halloween ostentatiously. “Over the years, it has grown,” says Alain. First a few pumpkins, then came dolls, witches… “We try to vary it depending on the year. Last year, it was spiders that were in the spotlight.”

And the Grimbergeois didn’t have to break the bank. “We buy things, yes. Particularly in France, because there is more and it is cheaper. But we also receive decorations, and we find lots of things at flea markets, etc.” An example: the decrepit tomb, which seems straight out of a cemetery.

“It’s a slab that I found in a landfill,” says Alain. This is the first thing I put in the garden this year. People, seeing only a grave, asked questions. ” “Especially since we had just lost our cat a little before,” sighs Marie-Jeanne.

At Christmas, even more decoration

If the toupee vault is quite rudimentary in appearance, this is not the case for all the ornaments. New this year: a frightening female mannequin, with a cadaverous white complexion and hooked hands, dominates the scene. The jerky gesture, she comes alive, like one or the other creature. “They move when there is noise.” With the surge of vehicles, suffice to say that the dolls have little rest…

Alain, although retired, will not have much rest. Because after Halloween comes Christmas. “And there we go all out,” the Grimbergeois already announces. “We do a lot more for Christmas and the end of the year. It’s actually because we were decorating for Christmas that we said to ourselves ‘oh yes, why not do it for Halloween’.”

The thousands of passing motorists are therefore warned: the Hellebeekstraat is not about to stop shining with the lights of Alain and Marie-Jeanne’s decorations.
