Devoting 30 minutes to a sporting activity three times a week would be as beneficial against erectile dysfunction as medication.

Good news for men who suffer from erectile dysfunction! Previous studies had shown that sport is beneficial for patientsbut a new study reveals that it could be as effective as medication.

According to research published October 9 in The Journal of Sexual Medicine30 minutes of physical activity three times a week “may be just as effective as Viagra and similar medications in improving erectile function”noted a statement.

To arrive at this observation, the authors delved into studies that focused on this specific subject. They examined the results of eleven trials involving 1,000 men. In each of these studies, participants were included at random in a group: either in the one where they had to practice between 30 and 60 minutes of sport, three to five times a week, i.e. in the control group without exercise. The activities tested included aerobics such as walking or bike.

Overall, men with severe erectile dysfunction enrolled in the first group reported a 5-point improvement in their erectile function, a standardized scale of 6 to 30. Those with a mild to moderate disorder saw improvements of 2 and 3 points, respectively. By comparing, medication such as sildenafil (Viagra) or tadalafil (Cialis) can cause an improvement of 4 to 8 points, clarified the scientists. This suggests that the more severe the disorder, the more helpful the exercise was, they continued.

“We were particularly impressed by the finding that men with more severe erectile dysfunction saw greater improvements with exercise, and these improvements were similar to those seen in men taking medications like Viagra.”said study author Larry E. Miller, PhD.

A link with cardiovascular health

Erectile function has long been shown to be linked to cardiovascular health. The first can be attributed to same causes as cardiovascular diseasesincluding inflammation, narrowing of the arteries, or hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis). “It is important to recognize that erectile dysfunction can often serve as an indicator or barometer of underlying cardiovascular health, said Amy Pearlman, MD, a urologist specializing in men’s sexual health at the Prime Institute in Miami, who was not involved in the study. To his eyes, “it goes without saying that any intervention aimed at improve cardiovascular health can also have a positive impact on erectile health.

These results could interest doctors and patients. Erectile dysfunction medications can cause side effects like headache, heartburn, nausea, or pain. This is not the case for physical activity. For the main author, the exercise is low risk and affordablemaking it an ideal first-line treatment option for erectile difficulties, especially for patients who do not want or cannot use medications.
