O Spotify would have studied the possibility of banning podcasts with relaxing sounds, nature, squeaks, machines and other noises from the platform to try to increase its profits. The information was disclosed by the Bloomberg website.

According to the report, the withdrawal of podcasts that do not involve conversations could increase the streaming service’s annual gross profit by US$ 38 million (~R$ 188 million). This genre of content is also called “White Noise” or white noise.

These types of podcasts play various types of relaxing sounds on a loop, such as static, crashing waves or rain, and are very popular within the platform. One of the reasons for this popularity is that Spotify’s algorithm would have benefited this type of content.

The point is, the creators behind these “podcasts” make money from the ads shown during their episodes. Last year, a Bloomberg report suggested that white noise podcasters could rake in $18,000 a month from such .

When Spotify realized it was driving its users towards white noise podcasts, the platform considered removing these shows from its feeds, as well as banning future uploads and directing people to other, more profitable types of content.

However, this plan did not go ahead, but the service confirmed the existence of the idea. “The proposal in question did not materialize and we continue to have white noise podcasts on our platform,” a Spotify spokesperson told Bloomberg.

While Spotify claims that white noise podcasts are safe on the platform, that could change. Still according to Bloomberg, some podcasters of this genre have noticed that their episodes are suspiciously disappearing from the service.
