Spring Vaccination Campaign Against Covid-19 Guidelines 2024 – High Authority of Health Recommendations

2024-02-29 15:13:17

HAS took the following elements into consideration:

  • Covid-19 epidemiological data for the years 2022-2023 and 2023-2024 showing circulation of the Sars-Cov-2 virus at low intensity, with indicators remaining at low levels both for cases of suspected Covid -19 in emergencies than for hospitalizations compared to 2021-2022.
  • The impossibility of predicting the dates of the epidemiological waves of Covid-19.
  • The vaccination recommendation “Vaccination strategy against Covid-19. Anticipation of vaccination campaigns in 2023″, adopted by decision n°2023.0080/DC/SESPEV of February 23, 2023 of the college of the High Authority of Health, which provides for people aged 80 and over and immunocompromised people whose immune protection decreases more quickly over time as well as for any person at very high risk according to each individual medical situation and as part of a medical decision shared with the healthcare team, an additional vaccination from the spring.
  • The dates of the concurrent autumn campaign against influenza and Covid-19, initiated on October 17, 2023 (with an opening from September 18 for vaccination against Covid-19, following the advice of COVARS), and until end of February 2024 (initially scheduled until January 24, 2024).
  • The vaccination recommendation “Booster vaccination strategy against Covid-19”, in its version adopted by decision n°2022.0301 of September 19, 2022 of the college of the High Authority of Health and updated in December 2022, which recalls the minimum deadlines recommended between two boosters, namely “three months for people aged 80 and over, for residents in EHPADs or USLDs, for immunocompromised people”;
  • Vaccination coverage at the end of week 03 of 35.9% of people aged 80 and over

HAS reiterates the interest in maintaining a spring vaccination campaign against Covid19 for people aged 80 and over, as well as residents of EHPAD/USLD and immunocompromised people regardless of their age, and considers that the dates proposed, namely from April 15 to June 16, 2024, are adapted to reduce the morbidity and mortality associated with Covid-19 and therefore reduce the number of deaths and the occurrence of serious forms. HAS recommends planning an extension of this campaign until July 15, 2024 if the epidemiological situation justifies it.

In addition, given the unpredictable nature of a new epidemic wave of Covid-19 and the emergence of new, more virulent variants likely to lead to a drop in immunity against severe forms and death, the HAS recommends not to exclude the possibility of setting up an earlier or broader vaccination campaign if the epidemiological situation justifies it.
