Spring Vaccination Campaign for Covid-19: Targeting the Elderly and Immunocompromised – Recommendations by HAS

2024-02-13 17:14:25

The campaign will be aimed at people aged 80 and over, or immunocompromised or residents of nursing homes/USLDs.

Requested by the General Directorate of Health (DGS), the High Authority for Health (HAS) is in favor of the proposal to carry out a spring vaccination campaign against Covid-19 from April 15 to June 16, 2024 [1, 2]. It also recommends planning:

  • earlier or broader implementation in terms of targets if the epidemiological situation justifies it, taking into account the unpredictability of a new epidemic wave of Covid-19 and the possible emergence of new, more virulent variants;
  • an extension of this campaign until July 15, 2024 if the epidemiological situation justifies it.

In terms of target population, HAS maintains its recommendations. The next campaign should address:

  • to people aged 80 and over;
  • regardless of age, to residents of accommodation establishments for dependent elderly people (Ehpad)/long-term care units (USLD) and to immunocompromised people.

In these at-risk populations, immune protection declines more quickly, hence the need to vaccinate more regularly. In addition, vaccination helps reduce morbidity and mortality associated with Covid-19 (death or occurrence of serious forms).

While the campaign started in the fall is coming to an end (initiated on September 18, 2023 and planned until the end of February 2024, like the campaign against seasonal flu), vaccination coverage is 35.9% among people of 80 years and over, in week 3 (January 15, 2024).

It is up to the DGS to implement the spring campaign for vaccination against Covid-19.
