Sara Costa was appointed as the new women’s secretary in Vienna

Vienna (OTS/SPW) Around 200 delegates met today in Stage 3 in Vienna Landstraße to re-elect the Viennese women’s board and to discuss proposals for specific measures, plans and political orientations.

Marina Hanke was re-elected by the delegates with 95.29 percent. Hanke stood for election for the third time and has been chairwoman of the Vienna women’s organization since 2019. “I would like to thank all delegates for the trust they have placed in me and at the same time see the election as a mandate to push women’s work even more strongly in the coming years. In order to put a stop to the developments of neoliberalism, we must be a real antithesis. With feminist solidarity and a broad catalog of demands, we fight for relief, security and a good life for all women. I would like to work on that together with the Viennese women,” says Hanke.

Women’s secretary Nicole Berger-Krotsch left after 17 years and Sara Costa was appointed as her successor

A major item on the agenda was the appointment of the new Viennese women’s secretary Sara do Amaral Tavares da Costa and the farewell to the previous Viennese women’s secretary, LAbg. Mag.a Nicole Berger-Krotsch SPÖ women. Since April 2006, the Viennese member of the Landtag and municipal councilor of the SPÖ Wien Berger-Krotsch has been managing director of the organizational agenda of the Viennese SPÖ women’s organization.

In her parting words, Nicole Berger-Krotsch said: “Working as a Viennese women’s secretary over the past 17 years was an affair of the heart for me, which I did with great pleasure. The diverse tasks in the Viennese women’s organization have shaped me and my actions as well as my view of society and I would like to thank all my companions for that. Of course, my commitment to the social-democratic women’s movement will not end now, because work on women’s politics is in my DNA. Of course, I will remain with the SPÖ Vienna and the women and will play an active role,” said Berger-Kritsch. “At the same time, I am very pleased that in Sara Costa, a motivated, competent feminist is succeeding me. Especially today we as social democratic feminists have a lot to do – and I can’t imagine a better woman than Sara who can take on these challenges,” concludes Nicole Berger-Krutsch.

The long-serving women’s secretary will continue to work with women as women’s chairwoman of the SPÖ Mariahilf. In addition, she continues to chair the women’s communication center ega: Frauen im Zentrum as the association’s chairwoman. She currently holds the agendas of education and LGBTIQ spokeswoman in the Vienna City Council, where women-specific issues and concerns will continue to be her hobbyhorse.

Sara Costa will take on the role of women’s secretary. The 33-year-old began her political work in her youth and was elected women’s spokeswoman for the Vienna Socialist Youth in 2013, before taking on the position of secretary of the Austrian Socialist Youth Association in 2015. After numerous professional and political positions, at national and international level, the Landstraße district councilor Costa has been working in the Vienna Women’s Secretariat since 2021, which she will head from now on.

“Women’s political and feminist work has accompanied me throughout my political life. I am therefore very proud to be able to take over this important function from Nicole Berger-Krotsch,” said Costa. “Our society is facing major challenges. However, not everyone feels this in the same way. After all, women in particular are still being given underpaid or unpaid tasks without being asked, for which we should bear social responsibility. It takes all of our strength here. I am full of energy to further strengthen our political structures together with our members and officials. Social democracy is needed more than ever,” the new Viennese women’s secretary looked to the future with optimism.

Chairwoman Marina Hanke thanked Nicole Berger-Krotsch: “I would like to thank you for your many years of work, which can best be described with the motto ‘Always for women’. In the course of her work, Nicole Berger-Krotsch opened doors for countless women within the Viennese SPÖ and together with them strengthened the Viennese SPÖ women as a diverse, powerful, feminist organization. The concerns of the Viennese women had a loud mouthpiece and thus found the way to implementation in many points. Nicole Berger-Krotsch has positively changed women’s lives for over 17 years and will continue to do so.” The Viennese SPÖ women’s chairwoman continued: “I am pleased that with Sara Costa a competent and strong feminist will follow in Nicole’s footsteps. As women, we are currently facing major challenges that we must overcome together. I can’t think of anyone better than Sara Costa for these!”

At the women’s conference, 17 motions were also discussed and approved. The leading resolution clearly positioned the Viennese women’s organization as an anti-capitalist, anti-fascist and pro-democratic force that clearly aims to put a stop to the neoliberal system and its effects on women worldwide. The Viennese SPÖ women focused on solidarity as the strongest weapon against conservative and right-wing forces. Concrete demands were then decided in the lead motion, which offer an alternative to the current status quo. The Viennese SPÖ women are calling for an increase in wages, especially in systemically relevant professions, an increase in social benefits, but also the introduction of inheritance tax and a millionaire tax, taxation of excess profits and the abolition of the “merit order model” on the energy market.
