Colombo: A top Sri Lankan prison official has been sentenced to death in connection with the November 2012 massacre of 27 inmates at Welikada Prison in Colombo. The Colombo High Court on Wednesday convicted prison commissioner Emil Lamahevage and acquitted police commando Moses Rangajeewa, a co-accused in the killings. The two were charged in July 2019 with murder.

A total of 27 people were shot dead, but evidence was collected once morest only eight. According to court records, the victims used weapons to try to force the prison guards to open fire. But they did not specify who ordered the murder. The massacre was condemned internationally.
