Due to contamination incidents at Western Digital and Kioxia’s NAND Flash factories, SSD prices may rise globally, and market research firm TrendForce believes that Apple’s mass production and shipments of Apple devices may be affected. According to foreign media reports, Western Digital said it has lost 6.5EB of BiCS 3D NAND flash memory due to the use of contaminated materials at two factories in Japan in January.
MacRumors reported that the contaminated plant was operated by Western Digital and partner Kioxia. The cause of the contamination and when production is expected to resume have not yet been confirmed.
Western Digital and Kioxia are one of the suppliers of solid-state drives, and the two companies have a 30% market share of NAND flash memory in mass production. Market research by market research firm TrendForce predicts that the price of NAND flash memory, a major component of SSDs, may surge by 10% from the second quarter of 2022.
Although Western Digital and Kioxia mainly provide SSDs and eMMC embedded memory for PCs, many Apple products use Kioxia NAND chips, including the iPhone 13 series, iPad Pro, and 14-inch/16-inch MacBook Pro. It’s unclear if any Apple products using Kioxia’s mass-produced flash memory in January 2022 will need to be recalled.
In recent years, many of Apple’s Macs have built-in SSDs from Samsung, but the company has increasingly turned to custom memory, resulting in the solid-state drive modules on Apple’s M1 Macs having to be soldered together.
But even if Apple Apple devices are not directly affected by the contaminated Kioxia memory, the supply crunch of NAND Flash may still increase the cost of Apple Apple, but whether Apple is willing to absorb all the cost price, or increase the price or pass it on to consumers , remains to be seen.
