St. John’s Awards $3.5M for Snowclearing Contracts | VOCM News

by Alexandra Hartman Editor-in-Chief

St. John’s is bolstering its snowclearing capacity with a significant investment in private contractors, as the city works to recover from recent heavy snowfall. The city has awarded $3.5 million in contracts to private companies to assist municipal crews in clearing roadways across several neighbourhoods, aiming to expedite the removal process and restore normal traffic flow.

The move comes as residents grapple with challenging winter conditions. City officials say the additional resources are necessary to address the extensive accumulation and ensure timely access for emergency services and commuters. The contracts are focused on areas that have experienced particularly difficult clearing, and the city hopes to have all roads cleared and widened by Sunday, March 1, provided there is no further snowfall.

Contracts Awarded to Three Areas

A $1.5 million contract has been awarded to clear roads in the Southlands neighbourhood. Another $1.2 million contract will focus on Kenmount Terrace, while an $800,000 contract will support snowclearing efforts in Airport Heights, including the Ann Jeannette subdivision, according to reports from VOCM. Work has already begun under these agreements.

The decision to engage private contractors reflects the scale of the snow removal task facing the city. The City of St. John’s acknowledged the need for additional support in a Facebook post, stating they are “taking the necessary steps to clear streets as quickly and safely as possible.”

Kenmount Road is a key artery in the city, and the presence of snowblowers there, as documented by VOCM News, highlights the concentrated effort to restore access.

VOCM’s Role in Local Updates

VOCM, a prominent radio station based in St. John’s, is providing ongoing updates on the snowclearing progress and related traffic advisories. Located at 391 Kenmount Rd, St. John’s, NL A1B 3P9, according to MapQuest, the station serves as a vital source of information for residents during the winter months. VOCM’s programming includes local news, weather updates, and community events, and its broadcasts are available online at liveradioca.com.

The city’s investment in private snowclearing services underscores the challenges posed by severe winter weather in Newfoundland and Labrador. The contracts aim to supplement the work of city crews and accelerate the return to normal conditions for residents and businesses.

Looking ahead, the success of this initiative will depend on continued favorable weather conditions. The city’s stated goal of clearing all roads by Sunday, March 1, is contingent on the absence of further snowfall. Residents are encouraged to stay informed about road conditions and exercise caution while travelling.
