He finished a handful of seconds behind the Japanese Shuri Akari. The other Cagou in the race, Titouan Puyo, finished fourth.

The crown remains on the head of Shuri Akari after the 4.5 kilometers of technical race in Les Sables-d’Olonne. The Japanese had already been crowned last year in Puerto Rico and he had already beaten Cagou. In 2022, it was Titouan Puyo, the new one this year is Noïc Garioud. He won the title of vice-world champion with a time of 27 minutes, 35 seconds and 26 hundredths, 11 seconds behind the winner. The Garioud family will therefore not have made the trip to Vendée for nothing since this medal arrives 24 hours after that of the little brother, Vaïc, among the juniors.

As is often the case, at this level, the details were important. In this case, Noïc Garioud fell at a buoy at the start of the race. Enough for the Japanese to take the lead and never be caught. “The Japanese is a killer, comments Cagou after his race at the microphone of the French surfing federation. I made a small mistake and he took the opportunity to leave. Impossible to come back to it afterwards. The Caledonian stuck between two Japanese rowers as he is ahead of Rai Taguchi, in bronze after this race.

The other Cagou in the running was Titouan Puyo. The rider took fourth place, 38 seconds behind the winner. “I’m happy because I didn’t compete this year (en stand up paddle, ndlr) and I was a little lacking in direction, explains the one who devotes his season to the va’a. Up front, it’s going fast, but I’m in the game. There was a nice fight with Michael. And we’ve been confronting each other for years. I have no regrets, but I made a few mistakes, I didn’t get out of the waves well and my board responded poorly.”

The objective now is twofold for the Cagous, but also for the French team. The long distance on the night of Saturday to Sunday, then the general team classification. “We still have races leftwarns Titouan Puyo. The girls performed well and we have a great French team. The confidence is still there.
