Standard had been looking for a coach for its first team since the announcement of the departure of Ronny Deila at FC Bruges on May 25, this is no longer the case: Carl Hoefkens44, will be the coach of the Liégeois next season: he has signed a three-season contract, communicated the Standard on its official site this Friday.

Carl Hoefkens, former Red Devil, has spent his entire playing career in Belgium (Lierse, Lommel, Germinal Beerschot, FC Bruges…) and England (Stoke City, West Bromwich…).

After starting out as a coach in the youth teams of FC Bruges, the former defender became assistant to Philip Clement at the Blue & Black (2019-2022) before taking the reins of the A team at the dawn of the 2022-2023 season.

Despite an excellent campaign in the Champions League (3 wins, 2 draws, 1 loss) and a qualification for the round of 16 of the C1, Carl Hoefkens was thanked by the management of Bruges on December 28 after three games without a win and an elimination in the Belgian Cup. The record of his successor, Scott Parkerwas much more catastrophic, and the deputy Rick De Mille finished the season at the helm of FC Brugge.

Carl Hoekfens will therefore have to try to bring Standard, moribund in recent seasons, but in clear progress under Ronny Deila, back to the top.

We are very happy to recruit Carl Hoefkens, who immediately won us over with his vision of football and his enthusiasm for joining our club, reacted the sporting director of Standard, Fergal Harkin. We are convinced that he is the right person to continue our work and achieve the goals we have set for the future!
