Standing up Against Hate: The Response of the Association of Traders and Craftsmen of Chauny (Aisne)

The Association of Traders and Craftsmen of Chauny (Aisne) was the recipient of filthy mail with homophobic overtones during the end-of-year holidays. They decided to file a complaint and all denounce an act of hatred marked by cowardice.

A sinister mail somewhat spoiled the celebrations in the city center in Chauny. While the commercial fortnight enlivened the streets of the town of Aisne, the Association of traders and craftsmen of the commune (ACC) was the recipient on December 23 of a foul letter threatening some of its members, in particular because of their sexual orientation.

The envelope stood out to me because there was a spelling mistake on the address. I first thought that a child had written to the association about the window game, a competition that we were organizing, says Jonathan Quizy, president of the ACC. When he opened it, this pet store manager was amazed. “it went in all directions, with homophobic insults,” he summarizes.

The author, who remains anonymous, lists shopkeepers, elected officials from Chauny and local personalities, systematically calling them “fags” (sic) and reproaching them for the quality of the Christmas entertainment. Jonathan Quizy is cited there as “Zoobul’s faggot“, the speaker of the Traders’ Fortnight as “Chris’s faggot with his nag voice“and the elected representatives of Chauny are described as”drunkards“.

It’s nonsense, fed up, we have to stop. This is what we have after 40 years of fag power. (…) All this with our money. We’re coming, long live Zemmour. Many of us can’t stand you anymore.

For his part, the owner of the bar Le Jet7, although not a member of the ACC, received his own version of the letter. “Him, the author of the letters accuses him of having closed on a busy day and calls him lazy. We are criticized for the entertainment in the city center. You should know,” smiles bitterly the president of the ACC, a committee which has been working for 77 years to revitalize the discreet town of Chauny.

He insults the entire team that organizes the commercial fortnight. We work on this as volunteers. You can’t please everyone, but the words here are violent. I wasn’t calm in the evening when I got home.

It was while discussing with other traders mentioned in the letter that Jonathan Quizy decided to file a complaint. An approach imitated by the manager of Jet7, out of solidarity. “I don’t want to give importance to the person who wrote this letter. Many have told me “Let it go”. But the words are violent and there are too many people who give up,” justifies the trader.

It must be remembered that the majority of homophobic attacks occur at school and on a daily basis (…) It does not even necessarily target LGBT people. You just have to be identified as a rather effeminate and dirty boy, you are called a “dirty faggot”.

In Aisne, we have had some exceptional events in recent yearsrecalls the historian. The first was 2-3 years ago, it was a commando of six people who repainted a rainbow pedestrian crossing. Closer to us, in March 2023, a seven-meter banner repeating an argument from Éric Zemmour was deployed on a roundabout near Saint-Quentin. It was the slogan “protect your children from LGBT madness“.

Jonathan Quizy does not see any explanation for this malicious initiative, the commercial fortnight having generally gone well. “I don’t know what could have caused this. In any case, we want to know who is hiding behind these letters, it’s human. I don’t want to give up, because it’s an open door to an imbecile who either feels superior or doesn’t understand anything about the world.”
