Standoff between government and media in Guinea: press associations suspend their actions…

After a meeting between the press associations and the union this Friday, May 26, the actions to boycott the activities of the CNRD, the holding of the radio synergy and the march were finally suspended. The decision to cancel these actions follows the lifting of restrictions on news sites, the restitution of the transmitters of the Sabari Fm and Love Fm group, and the end of the jamming of the frequencies of the Fim Fm and Djoma FM radios.

Since May 17, 2023, Guinean media have been subject to unprecedented restrictions. From restricting the internet to confiscating broadcast equipment and jamming radio waves. To protest against these liberticidal actions, the press associations and the union had issued instructions ranging from a boycott of government activities to the organization of a peaceful march in the Guinean capital Conakry.

After the lifting of these restrictions this Friday, May 26 by the government, the press announced in turn the suspension of the measures taken in retaliation.

“Thanks to the mediation of former communication minister Rose Paula Pricémou, she helped us solve this problem. She called the authorities of the ARPT before we went to their headquarters to find the Love Fm and Sabari Fm radio transmitters, which was our first point of claim. We got them back before going to reinstall them in Koloma. The second point was the jamming of the waves suffered by the Djoma FM and Fim Fm radios. Since yesterday (Thursday, May 25), the jamming has stopped and the third point was the difficulties of access to Guinean websites and this too has returned to normal since yesterday”, explained Amadou Tam Camara, president of the Guinean Association of the online press (AGUIPEL).

Nevertheless, Amadou Tam Camara wanted to urge the corporation to be vigilant and to thank them for respecting the instructions, which was the strength of the fight.
