Standout Performances by Matheson, Mailloux, and Newhook Elevate Habs During Training Camp

For the second day in a row, we were treated to some good old matches Reds versus Whites during the Canadian’s training camp. Yesterday, we particularly remembered the great performance of the duo formed by Alex Newhook and Josh Anderson, and this morning, it was Jared Davidson who stole the show.

As colleague Charles-Alexis Brisebois said, you have to take some and leave some… but this afternoon, I want to take some for a few players.

Last year, when Mike Matheson was in uniform, he was pretty clearly one of the best players on the club. His magnificent skating as well as his ability to withstand the attack quickly allowed him to rise in the esteem of the CH, but also that of the fans.

And even today, he was (by far) the club’s best defender. He even allowed himself a little imagination in this sequence, and it paid off.

Matheson may not be a top defenseman in the league, but when he’s on the ice, it’s clear that the Habs are a better team. His ability to create things and move the puck is not widespread throughout the organization (maybe only Lane Hutson has it, and even then he will eventually have to prove it), and it brings energy to the club.

If he can be healthy all year (he only played 48 games last year), it will already be a notable improvement for the Habs. He is very far ahead of his teammates on the blue line, currently.

That said, Matheson is not the only defender who stood out this afternoon: Logan Mailloux, who played in the same team as Matheson (both are in Group D), scored no less than two goals in the encounter.

This beautiful sequence with Josh Anderson particularly impressed, as did a goal with his lively shot from the blue line. He’s not afraid to attack, the young guy.

And speaking of Anderson, it’s important to note that he also looked good again today. His trio with Slafkovský and Newhook was once again dominant, and we feel that the three good skaters have chemistry on the ice.

For those who were worried after a more ordinary match for Slaf yesterday (yes, there were), know that he scored today. It’s still intra-team games at training camp: there’s no point in panicking after just one game, especially since it wasn’t catastrophic either.

In the end, the whites inflicted a beating on the Reds (the final score was 5-1), but we will especially remember the performances of Matheson, Mailloux and the trio led by Alex Newhook.

Once again, encouraging signs… and, unlike Davidson, which seem to have more chance of lasting over time.

A lot of

– That would also be my preference.

– It’s disturbing, isn’t it?

– Notice to interested parties.

– Marc-André Fleury knows that this season could be his last. [HF]

– Wow.

– To be continued.
