(CIG), developers of Star Citizen and Squadron 42, is a new breed of independent studio dedicated to developing AAA games outside of the established publisher system. Founded in 2012 by acclaimed game developer Chris Roberts, CIG is shifting the game development paradigm towards a more inclusive process, providing its global community with an unprecedented level of visibility and engagement by providing ongoing access to a product in active development.
The Star Citizen Ship Showdown is a celebration of galactic proportions as players around the world vote for their favorite ships and vehicles to fly or drive in the ‘Verse’. Community members promoted their favorite ships with their own original creations including videos, songs, thumbnails, photos, paintings and more during the Community Call phase of the event, which ended on August 29th. An archive of the best community creations celebrating their favorite ships can be viewed here. The event is now in the live showdown phase where everyone can vote for their favorite ship once per day. This phase will conclude on September 15th when the winning vehicle will be crowned!
To mark this annual celebration, developer CIG welcomes new players with free access to download and play Star Citizen, as well as free access to the Ship Showdown’s Elite Eight ships for new and existing pilots. Players who own one of the four ships with the most votes can also look forward to additional prizes, including exclusive in-game paints and a challenge coin. The winning ship will be honored with an in-game model statue, which all backers will receive for free, whether they own the ship or not.
The Star Citizen Ship Showdown Free Fly Event begins today, Thursday, September 8th at approximately 10:00am (Pacific Daylight Time) and will run through Thursday, September 15th. From September 8th to 19th there will be a referral bonus that will grant both the referrer and the referee a free Consolidated Outland HoverQuad.
