First canceled by Paramount+, the animated series “Star Trek: Prodigy” is saved! Season 2, never broadcast, finds a new home on Netflix.

In the great soap opera of series canceled and renewed during this year, here is a twist that we did not see coming. Especially since it is a rescue on the part of Netflix – which often annoys its subscribers with cancellations often considered too early. Yes, Mindhunter, Warrior Nun and 1899, we are thinking of you.

But this news should rejoice all Trekkies. Star Trek: Prodigy, which was canceled by Paramount+ before its second season launched, has found a new home on Netflix. Season 1 will be broadcast later in the year, while season 2, therefore new, will begin in 2024, Coming Soon tells us.

“Thank you to our incredible Star Trek: Prodigy fans, who have championed not only a series, but also a community that has always been bound by the belief that we are building a better future together,” read a statement from the producer executive Alex Kurtzman and co-showrunners Dan and Kevin Hageman. “We wanted to inspire you, but you inspired us. The team is still hard at work on season two, and we can’t wait to share it with amazing fans around the world.”

Kate Mulgrew, the voice of Admiral Janeway, adds: “I always thought Star Trek fans were some of the strongest and smartest in the world. They showed their collective passion, and we’re happy to be able to celebrate Prodigy once again.”

When the series was canceled last June, co-executive producer Aaron J. Waltke told fans via adding, “The entire cast and crew have a deep love of Star Trek: Prodigy.”

According to its synopsis, the animated series for younger children “follows a motley crew of young aliens who must learn to work together while navigating a larger galaxy, in search of a better future. These six young misfits know nothing of the ship they have commandeered – a first in the history of the Star Trek franchise – but during their shared adventures, they will all be introduced to Starfleet and the ideals it represents.

Besides Kate Mulgrew, the vocal distribution of Star Trek : Prodigy includes Brett Gray (Dal), Ella Purnell (Gwyn), Rylee Alazraqui (Rok-Tahk), Angus Imrie (Zero), Jason Mantzoukas (Jankom Pog), Dee Bradley Baker ( Murf), John Noble (The Diviner) and Jimmi Simpson (Drednock).

Produced by Eye Animation Productions, Nickelodeon Animation, Secret Hideout and Roddenberry Entertainment, Star Trek: Prodigy is executive produced by co-showrunners Kevin and Dan Hageman, as well as Kurtzman, Heather Kadin, Aaron Baiers, Rod Roddenberry and Trevor Roth. Ben Hibon is also director, executive producer and responsible for the creation of the series.
