This weekend, Nice becomes the world capital of triathlon. This Sunday, the city of Baie des Anges is hosting the men’s Ironman world championships. A planetary event, which further affirms the sporting dynamics of Nice. Rugby World Cup matches, the grand arrival of the Tour de France 2024, an international tennis exhibition tournament with the Hopman Cup… Once again, a sporting discipline finds its global epicenter in Nice.
The first out of Hawaii
This year 2023 is historic for the Ironman World Championships. This is the very first time in 40 years of history that the men’s and women’s events will be held at different locations. This weekend, it is only the men who are vying for world supremacy in Nice. For women, the appointment is set for October 14, still in Kailua-Kona on the Hawaiian side. A legendary place for triathlon, which no longer has a monopoly. Next year, we reverse the roles. It will be the turn of the international female elite to battle on the Côte d’Azur. A formula that must continue until 2026.
An ultra-demanding test
The most present nation on these Worlds, the United States sends 480 athletes. At home, the French will be 210. The course of the event was unveiled last June. A route that follows the contours of the usual Nice Ironman, a major event of the year. Once out to sea, competitors will have to complete 3.8km of swimming in the Mediterranean. Back on the pebbles, heading for the transition. Direction 180 km of cycling in the heart of the hinterland of Nice. The opportunity to discover why the department is called “Alpes-Maritimes”, with 2400m of altitude difference to overcome… Finally, the traditional marathon to finish.
