State Bureau of Investigation: diplomat tried to smuggle currency and 12 kg of gold bars out of the country

The State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) of Ukraine reported that one of the Ukrainian diplomats tried to take 12 kg of gold bars, currency and cigarettes out of the country. This information was published on the department’s website.

In February 2021, an employee of an embassy in one of the EU countries tried to travel abroad in a minibus, taking money and valuables with him under the guise of a diplomatic bag.

The search revealed €68,000, more than $140,000, many cigarette packs, 12 kg of gold bars, jewelry and gold with a total weight of 13.8 kg.

The total value of the seized amounted to about $1 million. These funds were sent to the budget of Ukraine.

The diplomat was fined UAH 26.8 million, or about $909,000.
