Stay Safe in the Gulf Region: Protect Yourself from High Temperatures and Humidity

Manama: Health experts have advised those in the Gulf region to be vigilant this week as high temperatures and high humidity are expected. Bahrain has recorded a high of 45 degrees Celsius this week. The Meteorological Center has warned that it will continue in the coming days.

As the humidity rises with the heat, the ‘wet-bulb temperature’ is likely to rise. What makes it serious is that the body is unable to get rid of excess heat through sweat. Care should be taken to cool the body in this condition. Failure to do so can lead to overheating, which can lead to respiratory and cardiovascular problems and even death.

A 2010 study found that 35°C wetbulb temperatures lasting more than six hours can cause hyperthermia in people. Wet bulb temperatures of 35°C and above are lethal.

Wet bulb temperature

Wet bulb temperature is a measure of heat and humidity. It is a method of assessing heat stress conditions. Place a damp cloth over the bulb of a thermometer. As the water evaporates from the wet cloth, the thermometer cools down. The resulting lower temperature is known as the wet bulb temperature.

Evaporation will decrease if the humidity is high. The body lowers its temperature by sweating. But when the wet bulb temperature rises above the human body temperature (about 36 degrees Celsius), the sweat cannot evaporate. The human body cannot cool itself. If the wet bulb temperature rises, the human body starts to overheat.

Drink more water; Take a rest

In case of rising temperature and increase in atmospheric humidity, one should be more careful. During the hot season, be careful to drink more water than usual. Dehydration can have serious consequences. Under no circumstances should you be exposed to direct sunlight between 11 am and 4 pm. Light colored cotton clothes should be worn in summer. Those working in outdoor environment should rest in the shade after half an hour of work. Water is lost from the body through sweat and urine. A lot of water is lost during the hot season, so it is important to drink enough water to compensate for the loss. It is good to drink ORS solution to compensate for the deficiency of missing elements. Squeeze a lemon in lukewarm water and drink it. Avoid soft drinks. Fruits with high water content like watermelon are good. There is a risk of food poisoning during summer. Food items like shawarma should be taken care of. Bathing twice is good. A good night’s sleep helps maintain the body’s immune system, which means cutting down on mobile phone time. Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight. Turbans and hats can be used to cover the head.

If you don’t drink enough water, your mouth and skin will become dry. It can also lead to problems like headache, drowsiness, dizziness, lack of enthusiasm and inattention. Symptoms of diabetes include increased urination, frequent urination, and increased sweating. Anyone with any symptoms should definitely seek medical help.
