The end of year celebrations are always an opportunity for gatherings, with family or friends. Welcome festive moments, but which, at a time of active circulation of several winter viruses, can sometimes require precautions. Especially if you are around vulnerable people.

This is why, this Friday, December 22, 2023, Public Health France (SPF) is communicating on the good practices to adopt over the coming days.

“The end of the year is conducive to family and friendly gatherings which expose different generations to winter viruses,” recalls, in a communiquéCaroline Semaille, general director of SPF.

Increasing indicators

On covid-19, SPF notes a “trend towards stabilization in the use of care with a level of circulation still increasing”.

For influenza, there is an increase in indicators in community medicine and hospitals. Note also that Brittany and Normandy are the only regions not to be on alert for the flu.

The bronchiolitis epidemic continues despite “a decrease in indicators” reports SPF.

So many good reasons to be careful in the coming days.

What practices?

If SPF does not revolutionize barrier gestures, it remains interesting to remember the right gestures to adopt.

  • Wear a mask as soon as symptoms appear (cough, cold, fever, sore throat) in busy places (e.g. public transport) and in the presence of vulnerable people, even in the absence of symptoms;
  • Wash your hands frequently with soap and water or with a hydro-alcoholic solution;
  • Ventilate your home regularly;
  • Sneeze into your elbow (rather than your hands);
  • Use a single-use tissue.

Together, let’s remobilize ourselves, around barrier gestures and in particular wearing a mask so that these holidays are synonymous with joy and health for all.

How to wash your hands properly?

As Health Insurance reminds us, hands must be washed with water and soap (preferably liquid) “for 30 seconds, rubbing the nails, the tips of the fingers, the palms and the outside of the hands and between fingers”. After washing, it is advisable to dry your hands with a clean towel or in the open air.

Recommended vaccination

Another reason for concern, vaccination coverage against Covid is “only 27.4% among those aged 65 and over”. Last year, this same coverage was 51.5%.

It is too late to get vaccinated for the holidays. However, according to SPF, it is still the best way to protect yourself, with the possibility of doing the double vaccination, flu/covid, at the same time. Practical.
