When iFixit first offered official replacement components for Valve’s handheld gaming PC, the economics of hardware longevity looked entirely different. Before this restock, the OEM kit containing the battery and repair tools retailed at a lower price, while the standalone battery cost less, according to data from TechPowerUp. Now, those exact items carry a $50 markup. The standalone battery is priced at an increased amount, and the complete kit climbs higher.
The Steam Deck LCD entered the market four years ago, meaning early adopters are well past standard warranty coverage and increasingly reliant on out-of-warranty electrochemical replenishment to maintain runtime efficiency.
Divergence Between LCD and OLED Parts Catalogs
Interestingly, the newer Steam Deck OLED hardware has avoided a matching price adjustment for now. The official OEM battery for the OLED variant remains priced at the older baseline: $79.99 for the standalone unit and $84.99 for the bundled kit. This creates a strange market asymmetry within Valve’s product stack.
As the performance and architectural gap widens between the original LCD revision and the newer OLED model, the cost of maintaining the legacy machine inches closer to the residual value of the device itself. A costly battery repair fundamentally alters the financial calculus for an aging system.
The Reality of Right-to-Repair Economics
Kyle Wiens, CEO of iFixit, previously confirmed that these batteries were never permanently discontinued and would return to the catalog. That promise held true, but the execution exposes a hard truth about component availability and supply chain economics in consumer electronics. Access to official spare parts does not guarantee long-term price stability.
