Conductor Stefan Soltesz suddenly fell to the ground during a performance of Richard Strauss’ The Silent Woman. The doctors could no longer help the 73-year-old.

The conductor Stefan Soltesz collapsed and died during an opera performance at the Munich National Theater. “It is with horror and great sadness that the Bavarian State Opera has to announce the death of Stefan Soltesz,” said the State Opera on Saturday night. “He died on the evening of July 22, 2022 after collapsing while he was conducting Richard Strauss’s ‘The Silent Woman’ at the National Theater.” The performance was canceled immediately.

The director of the Bavarian State Opera, Serge Dorny, said in the short message service Twitter “deeply sad” about the death of the 73-year-old. “We are losing a gifted conductor. i lose a good friend My thoughts are with his wife Michaela.”

During his career, the Austrian conductor of Hungarian origin worked in Vienna, Graz, at the Hamburg State Opera and at the Deutsche Oper Berlin. From 1988 to 1993 he was general music director at the Staatstheater Braunschweig, from 1992 to 1997 chief conductor of the Flemish Opera in Antwerp and Ghent. From 1997 to 2013 he was general music director and artistic director of the Essen Philharmonic and the Aalto Music Theater in Essen. He made his debut at the Bavarian State Opera in 1995.
