DETROIT/WASHINGTON (Archyde.com) – Stellantis, owner of Chrysler, announced on Friday that it would halt indefinitely in February the activities of an assembly plant in Illinois in the United States where it manufactures the Jeep Cherokee SUV, and that she might not resume her activities there.

The automaker, which employs regarding 1,350 workers at the Illinois plant, said the move would lead to layoffs.

The group said that the automotive industry has been “affected by a multitude of factors such as the current COVID-19 pandemic and the global shortage of microchips, but (that) the most important challenge is the increase in costs related to the electrification of the automotive market”.
