Stéphan Zientara appointed director of the ANSES animal health laboratory | Handles

Deputy director of the animal health laboratory since 2014, Stéphan Zientara is a recognized expert in animal viral diseases such as African horse sickness, foot and mouth disease, bluetongue, West Nile virus or epizootic haemorrhagic disease. Some of these diseases are re-emerging or are transmissible to humans.

Stéphan Zientara has also participated in numerous European research projects. He holds an authorization to direct research and is the author of numerous scientific publications. An expert in animal health with European and international organizations, he is responsible for the European Union Reference Laboratory for Equine Diseases and the World Organization for Animal Health (WHOA) Reference Laboratory for Epizootic Haemorrhagic Disease . He is also deputy head of the European Union reference laboratory for foot-and-mouth disease.

As director, Stéphan Zientara now coordinates all of the activities of the ANSES animal health laboratoryon its Maisons-Alfort (Val-de-Marne) and Goustranville (Calvados) sites, which aim to identify, characterize and propose methods for combating major pathogenic agents of domestic animals along 4 axes:

  • mastery major epizootics (foot-and-mouth disease, bluetongue, etc.)
  • THE zoonoses bacterial, viral and parasitic (bovine tuberculosis, toxoplasmosis, etc.)
  • THE emerging animal infectious diseases multi-species and in particular zoonotic vector-borne diseases (West Nile, diseases transmitted by ticks, etc.)
  • THE persistent and/or emerging infections of major importance for the equine industry (infectious anemia, horse sickness, etc.).

On the occasion of his appointment, Stéphan Zientara underlined the importance of the work carried out by the laboratory teams using the One Health approach.
