“Stephen Wright’s Death Linked to AstraZeneca Vaccine: Understanding the Risks and Complications”

2023-04-24 10:30:00

Stephen Wright, a 32-year-old psychologist, died 10 days after having his first dose of the AstraZeneca covid vaccine in January 2021. The coroner (independent official investigating the causes and circumstances of a suspicious death in the UK- Uni, Ed) confirmed that the product against the coronavirus was responsible for his death.

Covid: he suffered a vaccine-induced thrombosis

As an employee of the NHS (UK public health system), Dr Stephen Wright was among the priority people during the vaccination campaign against Covid-19 in early 2021. Shortly after receiving the injection, the father of two children with no medical history, suffered a blood clot in the brain which claimed his life. It was then listed on his death certificate: “natural causes”. His wife Charlotte Wright fought to have the role of the vaccine recognized in the death of the 30-year-old.

And, Andrew Harris, the South London Court Coroner, confirmed on April 20, 2023 the product’s involvement. The investigation revealed that the psychologist had suffered from a brainstem infarction, a cerebral hemorrhage and a “Vaccine-induced thrombosis“. The expert believes that this is a “very unusual and deeply tragic case”.

The cause of death will thus be modified on the official documents as desired by the family of Dr. Stephen Wright. The professional adds that he is “very important to record as fact that this is the AstraZeneca vaccine – but that is different from blaming AstraZeneca”.

Dr Mark Howard – consultant pathologist and medical examiner at King’s College Hospital also heard in the case – added for his part according to The Independent : “We didn’t know it was a potential side effect at the time.”

For her part, the deceased’s wife said after the decision: “it was clarified that Stephen was [précédemment] fit and healthy and that his death was due to the AstraZeneca vaccination. For us, this allows us to continue our litigation against AstraZeneca. This is the written proof”. She told World at One’s BBC Radio 4, “Even with loved ones, there were questions and queries about whether I was actually telling the truth, so two years later I can finally say it’s the truth.”

The AstraZeneca spokesperson reacted to the doctor’s decision and wished to indicate “the benefits of vaccination outweigh the risks of extremely rare potential side effects”. He added : “We are deeply saddened by the passing of Stephen Wright and send our deepest condolences to his family for their loss. Patient safety is our top priority and regulatory authorities have clear and strict standards to ensure the safe use of all medicines, including vaccines”.

AstraZeneca: not recommended for people under 55

If the increased risk of blood clots and thrombosis with the AstraZeneca vaccine was not yet identified at the start of the vaccination campaign, it was pointed out by several works thereafter. A study published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ) in October 2022 confirmed “After a first dose (of the AstraZeneca vaccine), there is a 30% higher risk of thrombocytopenia compared to a first dose (of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine)”.

Research into the reasons for this risk suggests that part of the product can trigger a complex chain reaction. It involves the immune system which is then likely to lead to the development of clots in rare circumstances.

This complication, of which Stephen Wright was unfortunately not the only victim, led the health authorities of several countries, including the United Kingdom and France, to advise against AstraZeneca’s product for the youngest.

“The occurrence, very rare, but serious, of cases of thrombotic thrombocytopenic syndrome (TTS) in people vaccinated with Vaxzevria led the HAS to recommend on March 19, 2021 to use this vaccine only in people aged 55 and over. more”indicates the French agency.
