Sting’s Retirement: The WWE Hall of Famer Nearly Retired in 2021

AEW star Sting was recently introduced by Mike Piellucci of D Magazine. The WWE Hall of Famer has revealed he nearly retired from in-ring action in 2021.

It has been noted that those close to The Stinger believe he will know the right time to retire when he sees it. However, the retirement nearly happened when Sting and Darby Allin wrestled FTR in September 2021 on AEW Dynamite’s Grand Slam edition of New York. It was noted how Sting carried most of the match, which was his most ambitious AEW fight at the time, but in Sting’s mind, no action mattered as he got his way. right hip in the days leading up to the match.

Sting’s modified right hip, along with bald knees, compromised his mobility. As the crowd cheered Sting, he focused on what he couldn’t do at 60 yet – the small, subtle movements his body refused to make.

Sting noted that this drilled a thought into his head:

“Oh my God, I think that’s it. We’ll have to find a creative way to bow me out. »

“There were probably three different occasions during the game where I was like, ‘OK, this is embarrassing,'” Sting said. “I am completely embarrassed. I’ll read all those fans online who say, ‘Yeah, it’s time for him to hang up. Time caught up with him. He finished. »

It never happened and with each round of positive comments from his co-workers, Sting realized there was no need to walk past AEW President Tony Khan backstage because he was afraid of letting his new employer down.

Sting hasn’t forgotten the dread that gripped him that night and that’s why, as the end of his career neared, he didn’t fixate too much on the details.

Sting, who will turn 64 in March, revealed that Khan broached the subject of retirement with him in conversation. Several wrestlers, some of whom had never been in the same ring as Sting, offered their names to be part of Sting’s retirement match.

Sting said he was finally ready for retirement, emotionally. He was physically ready, but he knows there will be expectations.

“And I have some insecurities about it, I guess, mostly because of age,” Sting said. “The more you focus, the more you have to follow that big buildup, you know? »

Sting knows the details of his retirement will be settled sooner rather than later.

“Part of me feels like I want to avoid it,” he said, because ultimately the perfect retirement isn’t about timing or opponents, it’s about what how Sting makes people feel and how he feels about himself.

He added:

“Whatever I do, I want wrestling fans to say, ‘That was amazing. I don’t want them to walk away saying, “That was embarrassing. I just want it to be a good memory and finally, once and for all, to say, ‘Adios’. »

Sting is looking to wrestle a few more matches for his 22-year-old daughter, Gracie, so she can enjoy her dad’s career in a way she never could as a kid. He’s also looking forward to working at the same company for a bit longer as his stepdaughter Katelyn, who works on AEW’s social media team and is currently training to become a professional wrestler. Sting is also looking forward to a little more time to mentor Allin, who has gone from on-screen partner to off-screen friend.
