Sto Klimaservice uses LiDAR technology to create digital measurements in no time – Baulinks

(September 20, 2024) Within 6 hours, architect Lisa Hänsel completed the data capture of the facades of 21 buildings with a total of 215 residential and commercial units. The digital measurement by Sto Klimaservice with CAD-capable building data now forms the basis for the concrete planning of the listed building. There was previously no valid planning data for the residential quarter on Weidendamm in the Hanseatic city of Wismar, but the housing cooperative Union Wismar EG wanted to renovate the ensemble from the 1920s/30s in terms of energy efficiency.

The residential quarter on Weidendamm is subject to the preservation statutes of the Hanseatic City of Wismar. “That’s why we have only repaired the facades so far, not upgraded them in terms of energy,” says Gunnar Schröder, chairman of the Union Wismar EG housing cooperative. This is now set to change. However, there were no adequate plans of the existing buildings and manual measurements were out of the question due to the size of the residential quarter. The aim was to record the existing buildings so that scenarios could be developed to develop solutions for the energy renovation of the buildings in cooperation with the authorities. Without such solutions, the consequence would have been demolition.

Up to 1.24 million measuring points

Gunnar Schröder contacted Sto project manager, architect Lisa Hänsel, who supported the project with Sto Klimaservice. She circled the building three times with a digital laser scanner and recorded the entire building shell with centimeter precision. The LiDAR technology records all openings, windows, doors, niches, recesses and balconies with high dimensional accuracy. LiDAR stands for “light imaging, detection and ranging”. Nicolas Trusch, Managing Director of Dotscene GmbHwho developed the digital scanner, explains the principle: “The scanner scans the environment horizontally and vertically at 360 degrees each with up to 1.24 million measuring points.” Lisa Hänsel describes the technology as a “huge relief.” At Weidendamm, the scan of 15,000 m² of facade area took just 6 hours.

Reliable calculation basis

The 2D and 3D models developed from the point cloud now serve as a basis for discussions with the authorities in order to find a viable solution for the listed district. This is followed by detailed planning. A reliable area and quantity determination is carried out on the basis of the scan results. This provides the basis for a project calculation. The client has planning security.

“As soon as the areas have been precisely calculated, the required amount of insulation material, base coat and final coatings can be determined,” explains Silvio Czikora-Pozar, Head of Digital Products and Services at Sto. This reduces waste. Individual color and material concepts from StoDesign, which are also created based on the 2D and 3D views, are optionally available.
