Stock Shortage of Encepur Vaccine: Updates and Information from ANSM

2024-01-10 22:20:00

The National Agency for the Safety of Medicines and Health Products (ANSM) reported on August 29, 2023 a stock shortage of the Encepur vaccine 1.5 micrograms/0.5 ml, suspension for injection in pre-filled syringe (Bavarian Nordic; distributor in France: Valneva), whole inactivated vaccine against tick-borne encephalitis, strain K23. ENCEPUR is indicated for active (prophylactic) immunization against tick-borne encephalitis in adults and children aged 12 and over. ENCEPUR should be administered according to official recommendations defining the needs and schedule of vaccination against tick-borne encephalitis.

In a report from January 8, 2024the ANSM reports that the release initially planned for the end of January 2024 has been postponed to the end of February 2024.

As far as possible, vaccination against tick-borne encephalitis should be continued with the same vaccine as that used for primary vaccination, but vaccines against tick-borne encephalitis are considered interchangeable even if the schemes proposed by the AMM may be different. In this context, the TICOVAC vaccine can therefore be used.

In order to secure the situation in France as much as possible and to preserve available stocks, the sale and export of the medicine by wholesale distributors abroad is prohibited from the publication of this information sheet on the website of the National Agency for the Safety of Medicines and Health Products (ANSM), in application of public health law 2016-41 published in the Official Journal on January 27, 2016 and the provisions of articles L.5121-30 and L.5124 -17-3 of the Public Health Code. This measure prohibiting sales outside the national territory, or to wholesale distributors for export, must be applied and respected until the medicine is made available normally, allowing a continuous and appropriate supply to the national market.
