The Structural Friction of Formal Mentorship Programs

Walking up to someone and asking, “Will you be my mentor?” introduces an awkward social contract. It mirrors the interpersonal friction of a kid walking up to another kid at a party and asking, “Will you be my friend?” Framed as asking someone to commit some amount of unpaid time to guiding a career for an indefinite period, it creates resistance.

Mentorship doesn’t require a formal agreement. One can benefit from the wisdom of those who came before without formal mentorship. Instead, learners can utilize informal, multi-source learning strategies: pulling small, useful components from a diverse collection of people who know things you don’t, without creating dependency on a single individual.

Engineering the Copy-Paste Method for Career Velocity

One way to learn from others is by copying what you observe. The Copy-Paste Method relies on isolating specific behavioral and technical traits from respected engineers and directly applying them to one’s own work.

When working alongside talented engineers, analyzing their daily operations yields dividends. How do they approach a problem? What do they read? How do they communicate in meetings? What do they know that I don’t?

Great artists steal. Engineers should too. By isolating the communication strategies and learning habits of peers, developers can apply what is useful to their own career.

Compounding Curiosity Over Passive Observation

Passive observation has limits. Breaking through those limits requires asking questions. When an engineer encounters something they don’t understand, the rule is to investigate instead of moving past it.

Effective questioning does not require profound questions. It requires tactical data gathering:

  • “What are you reading right now?”
  • “What’s something you think I could do better?”
  • Asking managers how they approached difficult conversations or engineers what their process was for solving problems.

If you don’t work around exceptional engineers, the requirement is curiosity. When encountering unfamiliar concepts, the protocol is to investigate.

Ecosystem Bridging and Community Knowledge Extraction

Relying on a single mentor is not necessary. Building a collection of people who know things you don’t provides resilient career infrastructure.
