Tropical Storm Oscar became a Category 1 hurricane this Saturday, threatening the Turks and Caicos Islands and the southeastern Bahamas, the National Hurricane Center reported.

The agency issued a hurricane warning for the Turks and Caicos Islands and the southeastern Bahamas, and a hurricane warning in the provinces of Guantánamo, Holguín and Las Tunas, located in Cuba, a country that is currently facing an energy crisis.

This weekend, Oscar, formed today and quickly dubbed the 15th tropical storm of the current Atlantic hurricane season, is expected to bring heavy rain to the Caribbean islands.

However, the agency classified the hurricane as “small.”

According to the National Hurricane Center, Oscar is moving west at about 19 kilometers per hour, with maximum sustained winds of about 130 kilometers per hour.

Oscar is not expected to arrive in the United States, but the National Meteorological Service in Melbourne (Florida) pointed out today that it could bring strong waves to the beaches of the east coast of the North American country.

For its part, Tropical Storm Nadine arrived in Belize this afternoon with maximum sustained winds of 80 kilometers per hour.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predicted that there would be between 17 and 25 storms this year, a higher number than usual. According to the entity, hurricanes tend to reach their peak in mid-September.

The Atlantic hurricane season began on June 1 and ends on November 30.
