Back home, you may have seen them if you went to the coast this weekend. Many jellyfish were stranded following the storm. The wind carried them onto the beach. Are they dangerous for walkers?

Ostend beach is covered with jellyfish, mainly blue in color. The children set off to discover: “They are blue, there are small ones, big ones, dirty ones, beautiful ones…“, “it disgusts me“But how can we explain such stranding on our beaches?”The wind came mainly from land. Therefore we had very strong currents in the North Sea, this brought the deep water jellyfish“, says Jana Asselman, researcher in marine biotechnology at Ghent University.

Jellyfish die as soon as they are no longer in the water. It is possible to touch them, but you must be careful. “Even though the longer filaments are gone, the shorter ones remain. You should definitely not touch it. It won’t hurt too much, it may burn“, continues Jana Asselman.

The majority of stranded jellyfish are found near breakwaters. This is where the current is strongest.
