She was direct and strict response from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs after yesterday’s announcement – warning of the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding the creation of marine parks in the Ionian and Aegean Seas.

Turkey: Reacts and warns about marine parks in the Aegean and Ionian

“The announcement of the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs politicizes a purely environmental issue. The universal challenge of protecting the environment should raise awareness among governments, not be used to create impressions.

The Greek Government will continue to unwaveringly support the sovereignty and sovereign rights of the country within the framework of foreign policy principles. Based on international law and, in particular, on the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, to which Greece is a contracting party. The practice of transactional diplomacy and the use of hybrid means for geopolitical benefits are not peculiar to Greek foreign policy”, emphasizes the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

It is noted that, according to what was mentioned in the initial announcement of the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Greek government will announce the immediate institutionalization of two large, national marine parks. These are two parks, in the Ionian and the Aegean, which will be among the largest in the Mediterranean. For their surveillance, a state-of-the-art monitoring system will be used, with drones, radar, satellites and boats, in real time. For the implementation of these initiatives, resources will be allocated from the Recovery and Resilience Fund. In addition, the role of the Natural Environment and Climate Change Organization (OFYPECA) will be institutionally strengthened, while the cooperation of the authorities with the Coast Guard will be immediate. The ultimate goal is to expand Marine Protected Areas so that they cover 30% of our seas, while by 2030 10% of our seas will not be allowed commercial fishing.
