And Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam announced that strong winds, rain and poor visibility cause “very limited air traffic” on departing or arriving flights until 15:00 local time (13:00 GMT).

And canceled more than 300 flights at this airport, which is one of the largest airports in Europe, according to what was reported by the Dutch state broadcaster and television.

In the north of the country, trains were stopped for safety reasons and traffic was stopped on a motorway in Alkmaar, near Amsterdam, after a truck accident, according to the Dutch authorities.

The Royal Netherlands Meteorological Service issued a “red” alert, the highest level, for four regions in the country.

The government sent an alert via mobile phones asking residents to stay at home in the northern province of Holland, which includes the city of Amsterdam.

Winds of magnitude 11, the second highest on the Beaufort scale, were recorded in the port of Ichmuiden in this province, “which is the strongest summer storm recorded” in the country, according to what was reported by the Dutch meteorological website “Verplaza”.

Because of the occurrence of about a third of its lands below sea level, the Netherlands is frequently exposed to extreme weather phenomena and the repercussions of climate change.

Rising sea levels are one of the main consequences of climate warming in the Netherlands, according to the National Meteorological Institute.
