Struggles at Volkswagen’s ID.4 Plant: Lower Production Figures and Staff Reduction Revealed

Volkswagen’s electric compact, the ID.4, is struggling at its plant in Emden, Germany, with production figures 30% lower than expected.

It’s not Tesla who wants. While the American manufacturer’s Model Y continues its insolent success all over the world, the one who presented himself as his most serious competitor is struggling. The ID.4 is clearly not attracting crowds, with sales figures 30% lower than forecast. A blow for the European number 1 which has invested colossal sums in the development of its ID range. This name was not chosen at random, ID meaning “Intelligent Design”, the name of this new range dedicated to battery-powered models. She was assisted a few months later by the crossover ID.4, positioned on the upper segment.

An electric range ID. which grows

Since 2022, the ID family (originally ID.3 and ID.4) has two additional models. THE crossover ID.5, cut derivative of the ID.4. And, less rational, the already famous ID.Buzz, neo-retro version of the Volkswagen combi of the 50s! The range will soon be supported by the new sedan ID.7 (equivalent in size to the Passat), which was unveiled recently. Let us add in passing that the Chinese market benefits from specific models, the ID.4 X, the ID.6 Crozz and finally the ID.6 X. In such a short time, the German manufacturer has not been idle, and the development of electric remains one of its priorities. Alas, despite these efforts, the ID.4 factory is under capacity, and the manufacturer had to find a solution…

Staff reduction

Since then, the manufacturer has no choice but to reduce the teams at its Emden plant, where the model is produced. Next to 300 CDD contracts of the 1,500 on the site will not be renewed next August. This was announced by Manfred Wulff, head of the works council of the site. Others could see their furloughs extended. Moreover, production of the ID.7the new large electric sedan intended to replace the Passat, would have been postponed until the end of the year “as a precaution”. It was initially expected to go into production this summer. Let’s hope that the arrival of the new facelifted ID.3 and the 7-seater ID.Buzz will give a boost to sales of the brand’s electric cars…
