Students presented suicide prevention project to the Ministry

Asuncion, IP Agency.- The Minister of Health, María Teresa Barán, received students from the UNA Psychology Department, who presented the “Yellow September” project, which aims to raise awareness about suicide and its prevention among the adolescent population of Asunción and Central.

Barán received the students of Clinical Psychology from the National University of Asunción, Larissa Soljancic, Marysol Riquelme, Sara Ingler, Ruth Giménez and Fátima Ayala, together with the project tutor, Cecilia Garcete, who held a meeting at the headquarters of the health portfolio. Also participating was the director of the National Directorate of Mental Health, Mirtha Rodríguez.

The “Yellow September” university outreach project aims to prevent suicide by promoting awareness among adolescents who represent the population most vulnerable to suicide risk in our country.

The university students explained that the talks are aimed at teenagers between 12 and 18 years old from public, private and subsidized educational institutions. So far, 1,500 students from 40 schools in Asunción, San Lorenzo, Luque, Mariano Roque Alonso, Lambaré, Curuguaty, Emboscada and San Pedro have been trained. They currently have 150 volunteers.

Mirtha Rodríguez, director of the National Mental Health Directorate, highlighted the importance of the alliance with academia in order to reach adolescents with mental health training, the health portfolio reports.
